Captin hook boys costume7/30/2023 The white lace neckpiece will give him an air of refinement and authority, and the hat crowns the look. The deluxe faux-leather boot tops will have him pacing the bow like an old salt. The gold trim and buttons of the burgundy jacket will make all those spiteful labels roll off the young captain's back like sea spray on a freshly-swabbed deck. But we made this great costume for your pint-sized privateer anyway, because we know that the name-callers are probably just jealous! High treason against the crown, they say. It's just that what we think of as a perfectly respectable maritime occupation gets called a lot of ugly names, especially by certain individuals in the Royal Navy. Leave me a comment below letting me know what your family is dressing up as for Halloween. We usually recommend that kids wait until they're a little older to commit to a life of piracy. So I love this one of Tick Tock Croc having Captain Hook hiding up a tree. We had a lot of fun with this year’s costumes and we had to play around during our photos. Now, I did feel like the Goof’s costume was missing something, so I did go ahead and sew up a quick jabot or dickie (I am not sure which is the correct term). Be sure to check out the Peter Pan Costume Tutorial as well. This costume is so simple but turned out so great! I love that both these costumes have no-sew options and are pretty affordable. I added on the hook from the dollar store. To complete the Captain Hook Costume I had my son wear a white shirt, black sweats that were a few sizes too small and had elastic at the bottom, long crew socks, and black dress shoes. You can buy a big huge feather if you can find one but I didn’t find one at the first two craft stores I went to so instead, I bought a bag of smaller ones, I used small white rubberbands to help gather them before gluing them on. I used the feathers to help hide the seams on the front of the hat. ![]() Use the hot glue gun to attach some gold braided ribbon around the rim.įinally, I used hot glue to attach the feathers. Definitely not perfect, but it all works out. Mine is very loosly wrapped on there, and several seams are visible, but you will hide those later. Next, cover the hat in your red felt/flannel using the spray adhesive. If you want to be able to better shape the other side of the brim, you can put some wire on there as well, but I found after covering in felt, mine was fine without it. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but kind of get it in a semi smooth shape. Measure how much wire you need and use your hot glue gun to attach it to the hat. In order to achieve this look I used some wire to extend the brim on side. If you look at Captain Hook’s hat, one side of the brim is much taller than the other. Her hat was soft and bendable, but if you have a stiff straw hat, soak it in water for 12 hours to help it soften before working with it. What is a captain without his hat? My moms had a straw hat that she gave us to make the hat out of. You are done with the jacket! Captain Hook Costume- The Hat If you want, you can then run ribbon around the back and attach it with fabric glue as well. If you have ribbon that frays, be sure to tuck the edges under creating a “hem” of sorts.Īfter you run ribbon on both sides, create a collar by folding the top over and using fabric glue to hold it down. Then use fabric glue to attach ribbon all the way up each side, and then back down the inside 1/3 of the way down. To start, simply cut a line straight up the front middle of your long sleeve shirt. Large white plummel feather or several small onesĬaptain Hook Costume- The Coat I bought both gold ribbon and this other ribbon that had a pirate feel.Gold or Pirate flaired Ribbon (I got 3 yards and it was about right). ![]() ![]() A red long-sleeved tee, preferably a size or two too big for length. What You Need To Make Your No-Sew Captain Hook Costume ![]() Today I am going to share how to make a no-sew Captain Hook costume. The best thing about the costume I made…both are super simple and have no-sew options! If you hadn’t guessed from my post last week, this year we are doing a Peter Pan theme. I am sure I only have a year or two left before my oldest ruins this no longer agrees to this so I am milking it for all it is worth. I rate it toronto slang7/30/2023 ![]() One of the early references to Toronto's unique lexicon came from Kardinal Offishall in 2000 when he released "BaKardi Slang," a rap song outlining the city's local phrases. "For there to be this new feature that's similar is really interesting to me." "It functions similarly to 'eh' in normative Canadian English," he explains. One of the words he's particularly interested in is "ahlie," another Patois expression that gets thrown on to the end of a sentence in much the same way someone might end a statement with "right?" Many of Toronto's slang words are shared with London, England, where slang has also been shaped by Caribbean influences. "But there's an extremely strong association with these words and Toronto," he said. ![]() The global nature of Toronto slang makes it hard to say whether the phrases are specifically from the city, Denis noted. "Wallahi" means to swear on god in Arabic, but is commonly used by young people in Toronto and other cities as an alternate way to emphasize a statement. If you tell someone to "nize it," you're telling them to shut up, or if you call someone a "waste yute," you're calling them a silly kid. There are countless other words that are Toronto-centric. As a result, everyday slang words pull from Arabic, Somali and Patois references, among others.ĭuring the Toronto Raptors' championship run, a fan-made sign referred to the opposing Milwaukee Bucks as the "Milwaukee Bucktees," bucktee being an insult deriving from a similar word in Somali. He said Toronto's lexicon is noteworthy in large part because of its unmatched diversity. "When he starts using these words, whether people want to admit it or not, it brings a sort of pride to this city."ĭenis said that's a basic function of slang: to demarcate social boundaries and make you feel like you're in the "in-crowd" by knowing the phrases. "Drake didn't create any of these (words), but we can definitely point to his global influence as a catalyst," Denis said. Phrases like "mans" and "waste yute" have been around for years, but Denis said Toronto's growing pop culture profile means the city's local lingo is being adopted by Torontonians of all stripes. When Derek Denis asks his Toronto-area students about what kind of slang words they're using, he says he usually gets cringes in response.īut the assistant professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga isn't just trying to keep with the times.įor the last two years, he's been studying Toronto's vocabulary and the way the city's ethnic diversity sets its lexicon apart. Tumblr couple aesthetic7/29/2023 “We’re seeing posts literally float to the surface from 10 years ago,” says Cortney Kerans, the head of communications at Tumblr. “If you were on Tumblr in 2013-2014 you should qualify for a senior discount,” reads one self-deprecating video from the genre, as though the era were several generations ago and not less than a decade. Others are digging back into their angst-ridden social media posts from their adolescent and teen years. Girls are recreating outfits inspired by hyper-stylized image macros of flower crowns and band T-shirts they loved in middle school. “Bop or flop?” posits a TikTok trend asking users to rate “coming-of-age indie pop bangers” from those years. Reliving a very specific subculture from the period that roughly spans from 2009 to 2014 - the era of indie pop, ironically oversize eyeglasses, and late-wave finger mustaches - is what countless millennials and Gen Z kids are doing right now, online and in their bedrooms. You see three colors on these shoes (besides the speckles on the shoes' black soles).
